The Post's sources were glowing in their praise of Portis, who accepted Mike Shanahan's challenge to improve his conditioning. The 29-year-old is down to 217 pounds after playing near 230 last season. While Portis is a poor bet to regain his explosiveness and stay healthy for 16 games, he's reportedly in tip-top shape and "highly motivated" entering training camp.

Though Portis enjoyed an impressive, diligent offseason, it remains to be seen what's left of his ability. He's averaged better than 4.1 yards per carry in just one of the last three seasons, and ranks fourth on the active list for career carries. Only LaDainian Tomlinson, Thomas Jones, and Fred Taylor have more.

Clinton Portis - RB - Redskins Clinton Portis opened Redskins training camp as the starting running back, as expected.
Since the Redskins have a new regime in town, Portis' place atop the depth chart is more a result of an excellent offseason as opposed to veteran deference. Still, he'll have to hold off Larry Johnson and Willie Parker over the next six weeks while staying injury free. The latter, at least, is a tall order for him. July 29

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Asked if Portis can still break long runs, Shanny replied, "I sure hope so. If not, he's not going to be our running back." While Portis has earned the benefit of the doubt from the Redskins after a strong offseason, we remain skeptical that he can break off runs longer than 10-15 yards. His burst has been gone for a year and a half now.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>While that's hardly effusive praise, one longtime Redskins scribe is predicting that LJ will end up with more carries than Clinton Portis this season. It's certainly a possibility. Portis is not only an extreme injury risk, he's also not played well enough to keep a stranglehold on the job. Meanwhile, we've yet to find anyone who believes Willie Parker will make this team.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Portis opened camp as the starter and has done nothing to surrender the gig. Larry Johnson will start Saturday's preseason game, but it's just part of coach Mike Shanahan's planned rotation. Still, Portis' declining burst and injury proneness are major reasons that fantasy owners should stay away.

NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora continues to hear, however, that Portis is moving toward a role as a passing-down specialist with Ryan Torain getting "more and more" of the carries. Torain must be owned in all leagues while Portis can't be trusted as more than a flex play going forward. Keiland Williams isn't worth a roster spot with Portis assuming the third-down role.

Portis admitted to hearing his groin "pop" during Sunday's win over Philly, which certainly isn't a good sign. We don't know the extent of the injury yet, but Week 5 seems unlikely, and it's possible it could cost him multiple weeks. Ryan Torain will be the featured runner while Portis is out.

Portis' recovery from a separated groin will be no easy task, and first-year Redskins coach Mike Shanahan is pursuing a "roster overhaul" that includes replacing aging, declining veterans with younger players in at least some cases. Said Shanahan Wednesday of Ryan Torain, "He’s a top back in the National Football League. There’s no question about it." Portis is a good bet to end up on injured reserve. He's due $8.254 million in 2011.

Ryan Torain - RB - Redskins ESPN's Sal Paolantonio confirms that Ryan Torain will start Sunday's game against Packers.
Skins coach Mike Shanahan is known for playing musical chairs at tailback and signed Keiland Williams off the practice squad Saturday, but Torain is slated for the bulk of the workload in Sunday's game. Paolantonio calls Torain a "perfect fit" for the Washington zone-blocking scheme that involves initial movement to the strong side of the offensive formation, then requires a sharp cut by the runner back to the weak side. The Packers have been surprisingly soft in run defense so far this season. October 10 - 10:15 a.m. ET

Any thoughts on how this carousel will be conducted after the Skins return from bye week? Portis could potentially return after the bye, but according to CBSfantasy most likely he will return week 11. Currently have Torain in 1 league, Keiland available in both my leagues, Portis available in one.
